Re:福尔摩斯的歪理之一

福尔摩斯关于摄取知识的原话出自于《血字的研究》第二章，原文如下：
“You appear to be astonished,” he said, smiling at my
expression of surprise. “Now that I do know it I shall do my
best to forget it.”
“To forget it!”
“You see,” he explained, “I consider that a man’s brain
originally is like a little empty attic, and you have to stock
it with such furniture as you choose. A fool takes in all the
lumber of every sort that he comes across, so that the knowledge
which might be useful to him gets crowded out, or at best is
jumbled up with a lot of other things, so that he has a
difficulty in laying his hands upon it. Now the skilful workman
is very careful indeed as to what he takes into his brain-attic.
He will have nothing but the tools which may help him in doing
his work, but of these he has a large assortment, and all in the
most perfect order. It is a mistake to think that that little
room has elastic walls and can distend to any extent. Depend
upon it there comes a time when for every addition of knowledge
you forget something that you knew before. It is of the highest
importance, therefore, not to have useless facts elbowing out
the useful ones.”
“But the Solar System!” I protested.
“What the deuce is it to me?” he interrupted impatiently:
“you say that we go round the sun. If we went round the moon it
would not make a pennyworth of difference to me or to my work.”

他看到我吃惊的样子，不觉微笑着说：“你似乎感到吃惊
吧。即使我懂得这些，我也要尽力把它忘掉。"

他解释道：“你要知道，我认为人的脑子本来象一间空空

其他的东西掺杂在一起。因此，在取用的时候也就感到困难
了。所以一个会工作的人，在他选择要把一些东西装进他的那
间小阁楼似的头脑中去的时候，他确实是非常仔细小心的。除
了工作中有用的工具以外，他什么也不带进去，而这些工具又
样样具备，有条有理。如果认为这间小阁楼的墙壁富有弹性，
可以任意伸缩，那就错了。请相信我的话，总有一天，当你增加
新知识的时候，你就会把以前所熟习的东西忘了。所以最要紧
的是，不要让一些无用的知识把有用的挤出去。"
我分辩说：“可是，那是太阳系的问题啊！"
他不耐烦地打断我的话说：“这与我又有什么相干？你说
咱们是绕着太阳走的，可是，即使咱们绕着月亮走，这对于我
或者对于我的工作又有什么关系呢？"
在我看来，这并不是福尔摩斯的歪理，恰恰是他聪明的地方。我们总说博
学多才，琴棋书画样样皆通。岂不知所谓样样通，样样松。与其蜻蜓点水
般的什么都涉猎一点，但却什么都一知半解，不如努力钻研一门学问，力
求精透。但是，这样的态度已经不为现代人所接受了。
福尔摩斯若是生在今天，肯定被认为是个无趣的大怪人呢。
