All knowledge comes useful to the detective.

Like all other arts, the science of deduction and analysis is one which can only be acquired by long and patient study, nor is life long enough to allow any mortal to attain the highest possible perfection in it. Before turning to those moral and mental aspects of the matter which present the greatest difficulties, let the inquirer begin by mastering more elementary problems. Let him, on meeting a fellow-mortal, learn at a glance to distinguish the history of man, and the trade or profession to which he belongs. Puerile as such an exercise may seem, it sharpens the faculties of observation, and teaches one where to look and what to look for.

The ideal reasoner would when he has once been shown a single fact in all its bearing, deduce from it not only all the chain of events which led up to it, but also all the results which would follow from it.

The observer who has thoroughly understood one link in a series of incidents, should be able accurately to state all the other ones, both before and after.

Breadth of view is one of the essentials of our profession. The interplay of ideas and the oblique uses of knowledge are often of extraordinary interest.

I consider that a man's brain originally is like a little empty attic, and you have to stock it with such furniture as you choose. A fool takes in all the lumber of every sort that he comes across, so that the knowledge which might be useful to him gets crowded out, or at best is jumbled up with a lot of other things, so that he has a difficulty in laying his hands upon it. Now the skilful workman is very careful indeed as to what he takes into his brain-attic. He will have nothing but the tools which may help him in doing his work, but of these he has a large assortment, and all in the most perfect order. It is a mistake to think that that little room has elastic walls and can distend to any extent. Depend upon it - there comes a time when for every addition of knowledge you forget something that you knew before. It is of the highest importance, therefore, not to have useless facts elbowing out the useful ones.

From a drop of water a logician could infer the possibility of an Atlantic or a Niagra without having seen or heard of one or the other. So all life is a great chain, the nature of which is known whenever we are shown a link of it.

Problems may be solved in the study which have baffled all those who have sought a solution by the aid of their senses. To carry the art, however, to its highest pitch, it is necessary that the reasoner should be able to utilize all the facts which have come to his knowledge, and this in itself implies, as you will readily see, a possession of all knowledge, which, even in these days of free education and encyclopaedias, is a somewhat rare accomplishment.

What the deuce is it (the solar system) to me? You say that we go round the sun. If we went round the moon it would not make a pennyworth of difference to me or my work.

If the art of the detective began and ended in reasoning from an armchair, my brother would be the greatest criminal agent that ever lived.

It is not so impossible, however, that a man should possess all knowledge which is likely to be useful to him in his work, and this, I have endeavoured in my case to do.

A man should keep his little brain attic stocked with all the furniture that he is likely to use, and the rest he can put away in the lumber-room of his library where he can get it if he wants it.

I am an omnivorous reader with a strangely retentive memory for trifles.

It is a hobby of mine to have an exact knowledge of London.

In my profession all sorts of odd knowledge comes useful, and this room of yours is a storehouse of it.

对于侦探来说,所有的知识都是有益的

象其他所有的艺术一样,推理学与分析学也是一项只有通过长期耐心的学习与磨练才能掌握,尽其一生也无法达到完美境界的一项艺术.在能够学会需要克服巨大困难才能领会的对精神及心理方面的分析,首先要从掌握基本问题入手.让他在见到一个人的时候,从一瞥之间,就要分辨出那个人的背景,职业或者行当.也许这样的练习看上去很幼稚无聊,但能磨练一个人的观察力,教会你该看哪里,以及该看些什么

一个理想的推理者当被展示某个事实的所有方面,那他就应该能用演绎法导出这条链中所有导致这个事实的全部因素,同时也应能得到这个事实所可能影响的所有结果

一个观察者如果能够彻底掌握一系列事件中的某个环节,就应该可以准确无误地指出此环节以外的其他部分,不管在此之前,还是之后

这个职业的必要素养之一就是全面地看待一个事物.将各种念头组合一起互相影响,从意外的角度运用你的知识总能带来意外的惊喜

我觉得人的大脑就象一个空的小阁楼,你应该有选择的将那些家具(知识)放进去.愚者会将他所能得到的任何东西放进去,以至于那些对他实际有用的知识被挤得放不下了,或者至少和其他东西混杂在一起以至于当他想用到其中之一的时候却要费很大力气才能找出来.一个有技巧的人在选择将什么放进他自己头脑阁楼的时候确实非常的小心仔细.除了那些对他工作有帮助的工具,其他的他都不会将之放入.哪怕是那些多种多样的有益工具他也会将之按完美的次序安放,以便在需要时能方便取用.如果认为这阁楼的墙壁富有弹性,能任意扩张,那可就错了.因为有这种想法,才会导致有时侯在你需要某种知识的时候却无论如何想不起来,哪怕你曾经确实掌握.所以最最重要的是,无论如何不要让无用的东西把那些该有用东西的空间占掉!

一个好的逻辑学家能够从一滴水推导出大西洋或者尼加拉瓜大瀑布的存在,哪怕他从未见过甚至听过其中之一.生命是一条巨大的链条,我们所知道掌握的,事实上只是其中的一个环节

问题也许将会以使那些以直觉帮助来判断问题解决问题的人困惑的方法得到解决.所谓掌握这种艺术的最高境界(指推理艺术),就要求推理者运用他自己知识范围内所有的的一切,以及其内部包含的暗示引导,就如你所能想象的,就是拥有一切知识.不过哪怕在今天,义务教育和百科全书很大普及的今天,荏然是一种很罕见的成就

日心说对我来说有什么意义?你说我们绕着太阳转,可哪怕我们是绕着月亮转对于我和我的工作来说又有什么丝毫的改变?
